The NFL Season for 2009

12:52 pm in General Arts by pgesystems

This season so far is VERY exciting and interesting. At this point (almost halfway through the NFL season for 2009) we have witnessed a little bit of everything. First of all in the AFC, the South is being dominated by the Indianapolis Colts, who are in total control. The surprise has to be the winless Tennessee Titans. The AFC West, who would have thought that the Denver Bronocs would be in first place and undefeated! (huge game Monday at San Diego). The AFC North in first place is the Cincinnati Bengals (you read that right!). The AFC East is extremely tenacious, especially between the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins and the New Jersey Jets – it is predicted that one of these teams will get a wildcard at the very least. In the NFC South, both the Atlanta Falcons and the New Orleans Saints look very formidable and many predict that one of them will win the division, while the other wins the wildcard. The NFC West is a three team race with the Seahawks, Cardinals and 49ers (tough one to call). The NFC North much like the West, is tight, but the Vikings do look strong (although up until now, have had a weak schedule). The usual tough NFC East doesn’t seem as tough, with the Giants and Eagles looking like the two top teams, which will go down to the wire.

My prediction for the AFC and NFC Championship games? Look for the AFC to feature San Diego vs Indianapolis, with the Colts prevailing, and in the NFC, I like the New Orleans Saints to play the Minnesota Vikings. In those games, I like New Orleans to win, and Indianapolis, so look for an exciting Super Bowl between the Saints and Colts. You want me to pick a winner? Look for the Saints to win their first ever Super Bowl, and for Drew Brees to be MVP! I’m so sure that I already bought my Labrador dog jerseys in anticipation! One of my friends even bought his dog a Patriots dog jersey. You read it here first! Enjoy the rest of the season – I know I will!

One of the Greatest Professional Leagues in Sports

The National Football League, otherwise known as the NFL, is one of the greatest professional sports leagues on Earth. They have thirty teams of some of the best athletes out there. Teams are comprised of big men, fast runners, and smart thinkers. Being the biggest doesn’t always make you the best linemen, being the fastest wide receiver doesn’t make you the best, there are tons of ways to become a great NFL player.

The Giants have a team full of these types of players which make them an early favorite to win the super bowl this year after they recently won a super bowl two years ago. Led by the new one hundred million dollar man Eli Manning, the Giants are undefeated through five games this year and have been doing it all. They are in the top 5 of most statistical categories this year including passing, rushing, and defense. Their defense after losing Kenny Phillips is still top 5 in passing yards allowed. Even after losing Justin Tuck for a little bit, they are still number two in rushing yards allowed. Their passing game has emerged two wide receivers who were great in college in Steve Smith (USC) and Mario Manningham (Michigan). Ahmad Bradshaw has emerged as a great speedy running back which is a great change of pace to the bruiser back of Brandon Jacobs. Bradshaw can break long runs and is averaging nearly ten yards a carry which is absurd for a running back.

The Giants face a tough game this week against New Orleans but with the NFC East not doing to great, they should be easy favorites to win their division and then make it all the way through the NFC division to verse the AFC winner, who I will predict will be the Ravens to make a rematch of not so distant super bowl of the Giants vs. Ravens. The Giants will crush them and take home the Super Bowl title. My family can’t wait to route on the Giants in there next game. I even bought a dog football jersey for my Rottweiler. He wears his jersey with pride, but some of my other friends bought their dogs an Eagles dog jersey just to get to me!

On February 6, 2005, Jacksonville Florida’s ‘Jacksonville Municipal Stadium’ became host to Super Bowl XXXIX. This was the first time the city was chosen to host the game and would be a great opportunity to invigorate the local economy.

The AFC’s champion New England Ptriots faced off against the NFC’s champ, Philadelphia Eagles. Super Bowl XXXIX offered the Patriots an opportunity to win their second super bowl in a row, an event that last occurred in 1998. Going in to the game, the Patriots had a 17-2 season while the Eagles showed 15 wins and 4 losses in their regular season.

The Patriots faced another challenge in the game, this was their first time playing a super bowl in an outside Stadium and a first east of the Mississippi River. Fresh from their 2004 super bowl win, the Patriots had a great season and were determined to catch their third super bowl in four years.

The Philadelphia Eagles, having only appeared in one other super bowl (1980), Super Bowl XXXIX would give them a chance to win their first super bowl title. However, the Eagle’s first-class defense could not bring down the Patriots Deion Branch’s outstanding record of 11 receptions resulting in a total 133 yards. Philadelphia’s 74 yard drive and 10-yard TD pass, late in the third quarter was just not enough, although the game was tied going into the fourth. The patriots scored early in the 4th pushing a 10 point gap at 24-14.

With 5:40 left on the clock, the Eagles made a 79-yard, 13-play touchdown pass to Greg Lewis to bring the score up to 24-21. Having only 1:55 left in the game, The Eagles were hopelessly attempting to gain possession and make a play to at least tie the game. With barely 46 seconds left, Philadelphia’s McNabb made a rushed pass to Westbrook at the line of scrimmage, Westbrook, instead of dropping the ball to stop the clock, caught it and was promptly tackled. The clock continued as the Eagles scrambled for another play without a huddle, McNabb made an incomplete pass on the 2nd down. On the third down, McNabb’s pass just missed Smith and was intercepted by the Patriot’s Harris, leaving 9 seconds in the game and a certain victory for New England with a final score of 24-21.

Om Feb. 04, 2007, Dolphin Stadium in Florida was host for the 2007 Super Bowl, this would be th eninth time the state of Florida hosted a super bowl event since 1967. Only one other state, Louisiana, has hosted the Super Bowl as many times.

Several NFL records were made at the 2007 super bowl, including many firsts. Bpth teams had an African American as head coach, meaning this would be the first time a black coack would win the Super Bowl in it’s 40 year hiostory. This also was the first time the super bowl was played on a wet and soggy field, as the rain did not let up all day. Another record was within the first minute when the opening kickoff was run back for a touchdown by Bears rookie Devin Hester, making it the earliest score in super bowl history.

The 2007 super bowl featured AFC champs, Indianapolis Colts against the NFC Chicago Bears, both teams having an excellent regular season. Both teams also had appeared in one other super bowl previous to the 2007 Super Bowl, Indianapolis in 1970s Super Bowl Five and Chicago in 1985s Super Bowl Twenty.

Peyton Manning for the Colts was named the 2007 Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) after completing 25 out of 38 passes for a total 247 yards and a touchdown, with one interception. Peyton Manning’s exceptional 10-year career as a quarterback would finally pay off with this coveted title, his first one.

Even with Hester making the early score, the Bears were able to keep the lead in the first quarter with 14-7. Because Hester had returned the opening kick to score a 92-yard touchdown, the Colts avoided kicking to him for the rest of the game. Going into the halftime, the colts had slightly overtaken the Bears with a 2-point lead as the score stood at 16-14.

Indianapolis kept their lead throughout the remainder of the game as the Bears made several attempts to make their comeback. The 3rd quarter finished with the Bears making a field goal and the colts making two field gials for a third quarter score of 22-17, Colts leading. The lead was not significant, however, in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, Kelvin Hayden’s 56-yard interception return resulted in a touchdown for the Colts as they broke away with a 29-17 lead.

Chicago was unable to push much past their own 47, and with only 1:42 left in the game, the Colts only had to bide their time. The 2007 Super Bowl would belong to the Indianapolis Colts, as the Bears last 5 plays netted no score. The Colts received their second and long awaited super bowl trophy.
