The Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur comes as a surprise to many westerners. We are so used to see pictures of sprawling, polluted third world cities that this sleek, modern metropolis doesn’t fit the stereotype.
One of the biggest tourist attractions of the city is no doubt the massive steel and chrome structure of the Petronas towers. This was the tallest building in the world until 2004 – when Taipei 1 was erected. The towers are however still the tallest twin buildings anywhere in the world. Inside there are a large number of offices and also a huge shopping mall.
Many tourists flock to the Kuala Lumpur Chinese market at night. In this sprawling warren of stalls you will find nearly everything you can think of. I compared a couple of prices to those back home and they were very reasonable indeed. Especially the prices of ebook readers and other electronic equipment were way lower than what it would cost in a Western city. And afterward our group dined in a lovely Chinese restaurant not far from there.
During breakfast the following morning the lovely texture of my dining room chair caught my eye. I asked the head waiter and he explained that it was made from rubber wood produced in Malaysia. I was totally surprised to find out that rubber wood could have such a lovely texture and be so solid. Later that morning I compared prices of dining room suites with those back home and what I found made me immediately order a brand new dining room suite made from the wood of Malaysian rubber trees!
You will have no problem with public transport In Kuala Lumpur The city is the proud owner of a very modern, very clean subway system that will take you everywhere in town in a couple of minutes. Ticket prices are very affordable if you compare it to prices in most Western cities.
Penang, an island off the west coast of Malaysia, is a hot, sultry island paradise that’s been a tourist favorite for many years. There aren’t only stunning beaches, but you can also visit a real rain forest and later in the day the biggest butterfly farm in the world. Even if you are traveling on a budget, you should really splurge a little here and make sure you have a room with air conditioning. This is the heart of the tropics!
